Hydrogen Peroxide (H₂O₂)

Introduction

Hydrogen Peroxide (H₂O₂) is a strong oxidizing agent used across various industries. At concentrations of 35% and above, it poses risks of chemical burns, fire enhancement, and decomposition under heat or contamination. Safe handling procedures are essential to prevent incidents.

Hazard Summary

  • Strong oxidizer; may intensify fire.
  • Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
  • Decomposes violently if contaminated or heated.
  • Releases oxygen; can cause container rupture.
  • Contact with combustibles can cause fires.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Mandatory PPE for handling H₂O₂ 35%:

  • Chemical splash goggles + Face shield
  • Acid-resistant gloves (nitrile/neoprene)
  • Full-sleeve chemical-resistant apron/suit (PVC/neoprene)
  • Safety boots
  • Respirator (if in enclosed space or spill situation)

Storage & Handling Guidelines

Storage

  • Store in original vented HDPE containers.
  • Keep in cool, well-ventilated area away from sunlight and heat.
  • Segregate from flammable materials, organics, and metals.
  • Do not store near acids or alkalis.
  • Use secondary containment trays.

Handling

  • Use only with trained personnel and proper PPE..
  • Avoid contamination; use clean, non-metallic tools.
  • Transfer using dedicated peristaltic or Teflon-lined pumps.
  • Always add peroxide to water (never the reverse).
  • Never return unused peroxide to original container.

Spill Management

During Transportation

  • Stop vehicle and assess the leak.
  • Evacuate area and notify emergency contacts.
  • Avoid combustible absorbents (e.g., sawdust).
  • Use inert absorbents like vermiculite or sand.
  • Collect waste into clean, vented HDPE drums.

On Factory Floor

  • Isolate area and evacuate personnel.
  • Wear full PPE.
  • Ventilate area to avoid oxygen accumulation.
  • Absorb with inert material and transfer to vented HDPE.
  • Do not use bleach, organic cleaners, or acids to clean spill.

First Aid Procedure

Skin Contact

  • Rinse with water for at least 15–20 minutes.
  • Remove contaminated clothing.
  • Seek medical evaluation.

Eye Contact

  • Rinse eyes immediately with water for 15–20 minutes.
  • Seek immediate ophthalmologic attention.

Inhalation

  • Move victim to fresh air.
  • Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult.
  • Seek immediate medical help.

Ingestion

  • Do NOT induce vomiting.
  • Rinse mouth, give water or milk if conscious.
  • Immediate hospitalization required.

Emergency Equipment Checklist

  • Eye wash stations and safety showers
  • First aid kit with burn gel
  • Clean inert absorbent (vermiculite/sand)
  • Ventilated HDPE spill drums
  • PPE kits near peroxide handling zone
  • “NO ORGANICS / FLAMMABLES” signage
  • Emergency oxygen supply and stretcher

Waste Disposal

  • Do not mix with other waste chemicals.
  • Collect in vented HDPE drums.
  • Label as “Hydrogen Peroxide Waste – Hazardous”.
  • Dispose via licensed hazardous waste handler as per rules.
